SHERMAN COUNTY HISTORICAL SOCIETY
A hot few days in July kept participants busy at the 2026 Sherman County Fair. The weather in 1914 was much different than 2026 for the Sherman County Fair probably because the 1914 fair was held at Jenner’s Park on September 22nd to 25th, a four-day event rather than prior years’ three-days. Local newspapers reported between 7,000 and 8,000 people at the fair on one day. (Wow! Sherman County’s total population was estimated to be less than 3,000 in 2020, the most recent census year.)
New for 1914 was a Better Baby Contest, sponsored by the Unity Club, for a Sherman County baby between the age of thirteen and twenty-four months. The baby was to be “tested by physicians who know what a 100 per cent baby ought to be.” About twenty-eight babies entered this contest, Laurella Beck, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Henry Beck of Litchfield, won first prize.
