A Sherman County farm that has remained in the Huryta family for a century was recognized during the Sherman County Fair on Saturday, July 18th, when the Ken Huryta Family received the Nebraska Pioneer Farm Award from the Aksarben Foundation.
The Aksarben Foundation’s Farm Family awards recognize Nebraska families who have maintained ownership of farmland across multiple generations. The Pioneer Award honors families who have owned at least forty acres of farmland for at least 100 years, while the Heritage Award recognizes 150 years of continuous family ownership. The awards are presented at county fairs across the state each summer in partnership with the Nebraska Farm Bureau and the Nebraska Association of Fair Managers.
Since the program began, thousands of Nebraska farm families have been honored for preserving family- owned farmland across the state.
