SHERMAN COUNTY HISTORICAL SOCIETY
On October 7th, the Sherman County Historical Society hosted ninety-two FCCLA students and their advisors at the Sherman County Historical Museum and Research Center. The students were volunteering for a community service project and were from eight schools (Ravenna, Holdrege, Minden, Kearney, Franklin, Palmer, St. Paul, and Loup City). I hesitate to list the projects that these volunteers worked on for fear of omitting projects—but I am going to take a chance.
Volunteers cut off volunteer trees, cleaned and oiled saddles, drained the garden hoses and put away, cut back peonies and iris, pulled weeds around the peonies and iris, spread mulch in the flower bed, deadheaded roses and pulled weeds around the roses, put tube insulation on farm equipment, collected outdoor signs and put them in the barn area, moved bricks and re-stacked them, made padded hangers, cleaned and oiled the church benches, and worked on labeling the military items. Some of the volunteers decorated one of the museum’s Christmas trees and put some of the Christmas decorations on display in the Ohlsen/ Jenner House. Some volunteers cleaned out the storage room in the Hawk schoolhouse, inventoried the items, and returned most items to that same storage room (and now members know what’s in that room and can even walk into that room). And the museum had several volunteers work on storage rooms upstairs in the Ohlsen/Jenner House.
