What do you remember about the county fair?

SHERMAN COUNTY HISTORICAL SOCIETY

What do you remember about the Sherman County Fair? The first county fair was a two-day event held in 1887—that’s 138 years ago! Although the fair wasn’t held until October, there were plenty of categories. James Slote won first for his team of mares (for all purposes), farm team, two-year-old team, twoyear- old colt and sucking colt. W. H. Chapman won first for farm team, brood mare, corn, and potatoes. Both men were from Litchfield.

Advertised as “one of the most attractive and pleasant sports of the fair” were the steeple chase races. The race was one mile long, with some of the jumps being six feet high. The September 29, 1887, issue of the Sherman County Times printed the rules and regulations for entering this event.
