Carpeter aunts: Indicators of bigger problems

EXTENSION NEWS

Carpenter ants are often misunderstood. While many people view them as pests, they actually play an important role in the natural breakdown of decaying wood. Understanding a bit more about these insects can help you determine whether their presence is a nuisance—or a red flag for something more serious.

Carpenter ants don’t eat wood. Instead, they carve tunnels and burrows into dead or decaying wood using their strong mouthparts. These tunnels serve as nests, not food sources. Their actual diet consists of insects, sweet substances like aphid honeydew, and sometimes meat and fats.
