Lotus Club wasn’t favorable to politics, religion

SHERMAN COUNTY HISTORICAL SOCIETY

Did you know that there was a society organized at Loup City on November 14, 1887, called the Lotus Club?

Inside the front cover of the Constitution and By-Laws booklet is the inscription: “May our Lotus be a perennial plant: beautiful to behold for the harmony of its parts; and, warmed by the sunlight of Truth, and watered by the refreshing showers of Inspired Thought, may it everbe(sic) pure as the White Lily of Egypt, for which it is named, and as fragrant, exhaling sweet odors from noble purpose and generous deeds that shall bless all who come in contact with it as it gracefully floats down the River of Time.” One item in the organization’s constitution: “At the regular meetings of this society there shall be no dancing, and no playing of games, each member shall be decorous and polite.” Another paragraph says “Local politics and religion, as themes for conversation, or debate, shall not be discussed at the meetings of this society.” Apparently, “no dancing” was a local decision as other Lotus Clubs often enjoyed dancing as part of their meetings.
