Edison helped bring electricity to the masses

Loup City residents who experienced an interruption of their electrical service recently were abruptly reminded of how much our lives revolve around electricity.

One might think the headline “Industry Which Once Was Target of Scoffers Has Grown to Great Importance in Nebraska” was written recently. However, it was written over 100 years ago! At that time the newest power plant had just been installed at Grand Island and had “giant turbines” that operated the steam boilers. Even though it was located on the banks of the Platte River, it was a coal-burning plant rather than a water-powered plant.
