The weather in 1936 was much different than in 2026. Already in January 1936 the newspapers reported cold temperatures and lots of snow. A couple days the high temperatures were in the thirties, but most days the lows were in the negative numbers.
Snow from the middle of January to the end of the month ranged from a light dusting to six inches at a time, making a total of between ten and twelve inches since the first of the year. The Litchfield Monitor, January 31, 1936, reported “Since Friday very little snow has fallen but old man ‘Cold Weather’ is still eating greedily from our coal bins.”
