Postcards of all types proved to be popular

SHERMAN COUNTY HISTORICAL SOCIETY

Recently the Sherman County Historical Society accepted a donation of some leather postcards; yes, leather. They were all sent from places other than Sherman County, but to Sherman County residents. One, from Cheyenne, was postmarked October 27, 1905; another was postmarked in 1908. This is another item to be sure to see at the Sherman County Historical Museum.

The picture postcard was said to have originated during the Franco-Prussian war. In about 1870, a bookseller realized that some of the 40,000 soldiers would appreciate having a method of letting their friends at home know their surroundings. His answer to this was a postcard, which could include a brief message on one side along with the recipient’s address.
