Mass of Christian Burial was held on Saturday, July 12, 2025, at St. Josaphat’s Catholic Church in Loup City. Reverend Richard L. Piontkowski celebrated the Mass.
Al Kowalski and Marj Spotanski were the lectors.
Ron and Theresa Turek and Tim Turek were the Eucharistic ministers.
Jeanie Curlo and Phyllis Janulewicz were the gift bearers.
Greg Turek, Diane Schleichardt, and Patty Butcher were the signers. Pat Setlik was the accompanist.
Selections included “Be Not Afraid,” “On Eagle’s Wings,” and “How Great Thou Art.”
Recorded selections included “Dancing in the Sky,” by Dani and Lizzy during the vigil service. “Go Rest High on that Mountain” by Vince Gill during the Mass. “How Great Thou Art” by Elvis Presley was played during the committal service.
Casketbearers included Alan Palu, Clint Palu, Tanner Palu, Jess Stanczyk, Mike Dorsey, Monty Hurlburt, Clint Obermiller, and Hunter Dorsey, Burial followed in the Evergreen Cemetery in Loup City.
Memorials are suggested to the Loup City EMTs or to the Sherman County Senior Center for the Meals on Wheels Program.
Peters Funeral Home of St. Paul is assisting the family.
Madeline was born on August 10, 1929, north of Ashton in the Paplin area, the daughter of Frank and Catherine (Wojtalewicz) Kuszak. It was here where she grew up and attended schools in the area. Her parents both died when she was young and she was then raised by her older sister, Evelyn. After completing her education, she started working as a waitress in Loup City cafés.
Madeline was united in marriage to Harry W. Palu on May 20, 1947, in Loup City. The couple first lived in Loup City. Madeline began being a waitress at the Loup City Sale Barn, which she eventually became the manager of. For a number of years, she and Harry farmed in the Loup City area and for many years she and Evelyn Spotanski cleaned the St. Josaphat’s Parish Center.
Harry passed away on March 7, 2013, and Madeline continued to live in her home until this past week.
Madeline was a member of St. Josaphat’s Catholic Church and the Council of Catholic Women.
Madeline loved cleaning, cooking, and baking. Her family loved her Angel Food Cakes and cookies.
Madeline is survived by one son and two daughters-in law, Jan Palu of Grand Island and Terry and Yvonne Palu of Loup City; six grandchildren, Alan and Tina Palu, Clint Palu, Carrie and Monty Hurlburt, Dori and Mike Dorsey, Kayla Berg, and Tanner and Jenna Palu; fifteen great grandchildren; and eight great great grandchildren; sister-in-law, Marian Palu of Loup City; many nieces and nephews; and her best friends, Marj Spotanski and Lois Molt, both of Loup City.
In addition to her husband, Harry, she was preceded in death by her parents; Frank and Catherine; son, Ron Palu on October 17, 2020; and her sisters and spouses, Theresa and Cash Turek, Elizabeth and Louie Lewandowski, Evelyn and Henry Thode, and Lorraine and Dean Leighton.
